Fostering Unity in Urhobo Nation

FOSTERING UNITY IN URHOBO NATION

By Engr. Ovie Ukochovwera, MNSE.

A Paper Presented at Urhobo World United (UWU) Day

Oru Standard Hotel, Effurun, Delta State, Saturday, December 29, 2012.

The clarion call for unity in Urhobo Nation has been a recurrent decimal after the demise of late Chief Mukoro Mowoe, the great Urhobo Patriot.

The Urhobo nationality with a population of more than two million people is the fifth largest ethnic group in Nigeria, and the largest in Delta State. The Urhobo are a heterogeneous people whose social organization is based on cultural units known as clans/kingdoms. There are at present twenty-four such autonomous clans/kingdoms, each ruled by an Ovie or a traditional clan head of a kind, for example, the Okpara-Uku of Orogun, the Okobaro of Ughievwen and the Osuivie of Agbarho. These clans have distinct dialects and traditions that reflect slight variations in origin and migratory patterns.

The Urhobo neighbours to the North-East are Ndokwas, to the South-East are Isokos, to the North are Binis, the West are Itsekiris and the South are Ijaws.

The twenty-four kingdoms of Urhobo Nation with their cultural headquarters, official administrative affiliation and traditional head title are shown on the table below:

The State of Urhobo Nation

Today, the Urhobo Nation has no significant voice at the executive and legislative levels of Delta State Government. The situation is not better at the national level.

Mr. Felibens Edeheri Okoro, from Ughievwen Clan posited that the many dialects Urhobo have is the bane of her disunity. (The Urhobo Voice, December 24, 2012, page 17)

The Way Forward

The question beckoning on every Urhobo for an answer is how we can foster unity in Urhobo Nation. Until this is answered and done, we cannot speak with one voice to have a say in state and national politics.

So what are the possible avenues that could be utilized to foster unity among the various clans in Urhobo ethnic group? This discourse will highlight some of the possible channels.

One of the avenues is organizing annual sporting competitions among the various sub-cultural units (clans). Sports are all forms of physical activities that contribute to fitness, mental well-being and social interaction of an individual. At the grassroots or community level, sport can be seen to provide a useful way of creating an environment in which people can come together to: work towards the same goal, show respect for others and share space and equipment.  It fosters friendship, understanding, peace and positive cooperation between and among participants. Emphasis should be placed on our traditional games too-wrestling.

Secondly, Annual Essay/Quiz competition for secondary school students and tertiary institution undergraduates should be organized, with participants drawn from all the clans. Awards should be given to the winner, first and second runner-ups respectively. Implementation of Scholarship and Skill Acquisition Schemes should also be utilized.

I would like to use this medium to commend Senator Akpor Pius Ewherido, the Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District (entirely Urhobo Nation) for organizing Senator Pius Ewherido Urhobo Language Competition this year. It was organized to encourage the writing and speaking of Urhobo among the younger generation so as to arrest the gradual decline in appreciation of the Urhobo language, participants were drawn from all the Urhobo clans. The Winner of the competition was Miss Sagbodje Eguono, from Agbarha-Otor. She was awarded a grand star prize of a brand new car.

The Urhobo Language Competition will now be an annual event to help foster unity in Urhobo Nation.

Beauty Pageants should also be organized to promote Urhobo cultural heritage and unity. The composition of the contestants should be from all the Urhobo clans. With this put in place, we will be watching Miss Urhobo pageant on the cable networks. Execution of Sustainable Community Development (SCD) Projects in Urhobo communities is another channel to foster unity in Urhobo Land. Projects such as: construction of classroom blocks, blocks of lock-up market stall, provision water schemes, drainage and construction of access roads.

Pan-Urhobo groups/associations and the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) should look into the aforementioned channels, others are much available though not highlighted here. Every Urhobo should come together for the greatness and overall benefit of Urhobo Nation.

Utilizing the Social Media Factor.

Social media is an instrument of communication, it could be a website that doesn’t just give you information, but interacts with you while giving you that information. This interaction can be as simple as asking for your comments or letting you vote on an article, or it can be as complex as Flixster recommending movies to you based on the ratings of other people with similar interests.

Think of regular media as a one-way street where you can read a newspaper or listen to a report on television, but you have very limited ability to give your thoughts on the matter.

Social media, on the other hand, is a two-way street that gives you the ability to communicate too.

Social media is such a broad term; it covers a large range of websites. But the one common link between these websites is that you are able to interact with the website and interact with other visitors.

Here are some examples of social media websites:

  • Social Bookmarking: Interact by tagging websites and searching through websites bookmarked by other people. Examples are: icio.us, Blinklist, Simpy.
  • Social News: Interact by voting for articles and commenting on them. Examples are: Digg, Propeller, and Reddit.
  • Social Networking: Interact by adding friends, commenting on profiles, joining groups and having discussions. Examples are: Facebook, Hi5, and Twitter.
  • Social Photo and Video Sharing: Interact by sharing photos or videos and commenting on user submissions. Examples are: YouTube, Flickr.
  • Wikis: Interact by adding articles and editing existing articles. Examples are: Wikipedia, Wikia.

The social media is now being used as a means of promoting principle of democracy and fast-tracking social reforms in most countries. The Arab Spring that took place in 2011 would readily flood our mind, where Facebook (FB), Twitter and YouTube were used to quickly disseminate information and instructions resulting in social revolution that lead to the removal of the leadership of the affected countries.

The Urhobo Nation is not being left out in this trend. There are many Urhobo groups on Facebook, Twitter. One will see lots of Urhobo educational materials and songs on YouTube, and they can be downloaded using YouTube Downloader Software. Some of the Urhobo groups on FB include: Urhobo World United (UWU), Urhobo People Forum (UPF), Urhobo Nation and Proudly Urhobo.

These groups have contributed in fostering unity in Urhobo nation. Good friendship has been struck in these groups. Better appreciation of Urhobo people and culture is being projected there too.

UWU Day that is being held today is a pointer to the fact that the place of social media in promoting unity in Urhobo nationality cannot be downplayed and should be boosted up.UWUites have been posting and commenting on threads online, but today we all gather here to shake hands, hug, dance, eat together as a family and start a lifetime friendship/relationship.

Other Pan-Urhobo associations should utilize the social media in fostering unity among the Urhobo clans vis-à-vis promoting Urhobo culture, language and image to the world.

Conclusion

Until every Urhobo see their fellow Urhobo as their brothers irrespective of clan of origin, unity in Urhobo will be far-fetched.Urhobos should have this  natural love for their tribe-this love will make you not to execute shoddy projects in Urhobo Land nor betray the genuine interest of a fellow Urhobo. This love will make you agitate for better interest of Urhobo and protect the interest of the tribe.

The Urhobo Nation is in dire need of development. Let’s come together irrespective of our dialects, religious and political affiliations to build a better Urhobo Nation.

Christmas-Heralding Hope for Humanity

It was a dark world
Hopeless situation
Lost relationship with my creator
Eternity uncertain

Then shone a bright light
That heralded hope to me
God’s plan for my future
To spend eternity with Him

The birth of Jesus Christ-the bright light
My life now filled with hope
Relationship with my creator now restored
Eternity with my creator now certain

Angels celebrated his birth
The human race have been celebrating it
I have been celebrating it
Merry Christmas!

Message to Fellow Deltans on April 11,2015 Gubernatorial Election

Today Nigerians will go to the polls to vote  their various States’ Governors. And also decide who will represent them in the State House of Assembly. Before the March  28th Presidential elections,an average Nigerian has lost faith in the electoral process.
Then, ballot snatching culminating into rigging was the order of the day.Politicians see the elections as do-or-die affair.Off course, they have their foot soldiers at their disposal to cause chaos during or after elections.I still remember the 2003 elections,it was so bloody then between PDP and AD in Uvwie LGA of Delta State.I thank God that most of the ‘boys’are now wise not to be used as Pawns(Chess game on my mind).
My prayer is that today’s gubernatorial election in Delta State should be devoid of political violence between the three major players : PDP,APC and LP.
As a true son of the soil,I am so concerned about the development of my beloved State-Delta State. The Power Sector need to be improved. What stop the state from having a viable Independent Power Plants(IPPs).Must we be entirely dependent on the National Grid? For Delta State to be a fully industrialized, this must be put in place.
What next do we need in the State?.It is industrialization vis-a-vis mechanized agriculture. The Agricultural sector should be optimally harnessed. All the Sea Ports should be reopened. There is new one onboard now though. With these in place, the high rate of unemployment will drop in the State.
We can’t shy away from the fact that we are oil-producing state.Waivers should be given to the various International Oil Companies(IOCs) and Oil Servicing Companies so they should come back to Warri and other parts of the state.Warri should be restore back to the “Oil City” status she used to be known for.
The Educational sector should also be looked into. Some of the government schools need revamping. The psyche of most of the students of government schools need to be re-oriented.Teachers morale should be boosted up.
It is no news that most of the roads are in very very very good shape. We need good roads. All the  dilapidated ones should be repair.
Fellow Deltans,as we go to our various polling units, let’s put aside ethnic sentiment and logically vote the candidate who can deliver.Who can lead us as Joshua to the Promise land.We should be tired of pseudo-leaders who are only concern about amassing wealth from the state coffers to the detriment of the citizenry.
We are now in an era where  our votes count.
Vote Wisely!
#DeltansDecide2015.

Happy 54th Independence Anniversary Nigeria

10678500_829057417128566_4826918331318431695_n

I am proud to be a Nigerian and will always be a patriotic Nigerian despite the various challenges facing my beloved country.

To our fallen heroes and gallant soldiers who died to keep us safe from terrorists your memory will always be remembered.

To our leaders I pray for more wisdom and heart of patriotism for you. With this in place, looting of the country treasury for personal gains will be a thing of the past. The comfort of the citizenry will be the driving force not greed for personal gratifications.

I believe strongly in Nigeria’s greatness. With the driving force of true patriotism devoid of corruption, there will be a restoration to that enviable position we used to occupy.
